About this site

This site was built to house information about the project surrounding the Royal National Institute of the Blind (RNIB) Blind Date Valentine game. The RNIB have been campaigning for better web site accessibility and to raise the awareness of developers on accessible web design. The campaign called has done excellent work in bringing accessibility to the attention of many people within the industry. See more campaign information.

The Flash Game

The Flash game demonstrates that it is possible to make Flash movies accessible to people with visual impairments. The game can be accessed with the latest version of the popular screen readers 'Jaws for Windows' and 'Window- Eyes' if they have the Flash plug-in.

Some screen reader users may not have the latest versions of the software, or choose not to install the Flash Pluggin. For those people a HTML version of the game has been made.

The HTML Game

The web page version is made with HTML, so is accessible to any internet device. It also includes the sounds from the Flash version saved as MP3 files.

This HTML game conforms to level Triple-A of the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0. The Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 1.0 explain how to make Web content accessible to people with disabilities. Conformance to these Guidelines will help make the Web more accessible to users with disabilities and will benefit all users.

Bobby Approved

Bobby is a Web-based tool that analyses Web pages for their accessibility to people with disabilities. Many people with disabilities use special Web browsers, such as one that reads text out loud using a speech synthesizer for blind users. The suggestions made by Bobby help authors to add information to a Web page which will help the special browsers work more effectively. This web site passes the Bobby test.
