RNIB Blind Date: an accessible game
RNIB Blind date has been designed so that blind people, who use
speech synthesis software to "hear" the web, can play
it too.
RNIB Blind Date is accessible with Flash 6 using Jaws 4.5 and Window-eyes
4.2. The Flash version has been developed to demonstrate how Flash
technology can be used in an accessible way and there are two characters
to choose from.Play the Flash game.

If you do not have Flash installed please download
the Flash 6 player.
If you are using an older version of screenreader software, there
is also a fully accessible HTML version. This version has been developed
to allow all users to play RNIB Blind Date and there are four characters
in the game. Play the HTML game.
RNIB Campaign for Good Web Design The web isn't just for people who can see! Did you know that many of the UK's 2 million blind and partially
sighted people enjoy using the web to shop, bank, read the news
and even play games? Technology has been developed that can turn web pages into synthesised
speech, so that someone who is blind can hear the text that is displayed
on the screen. This technology is called a 'screenreader'. You can
hear how this page sounds in a screenreader
(600k mp3 file).
RNIB Blind Date has been designed for everyone to enjoy, whether
you can see
the screen or if you are using a screenreader. Some partially sighted
people use screen magnification software to make the text bigger.
They will
be able to read this site easily too.
But screenreaders and screen magnification only work properly
when web
designers code web sites following the guidelines published by
the Web
Accessibility Initiative. RNIB's Campaign for Good Web Design aims
to make
web designers aware of the guidelines and encourages anyone who
creates a web
site to keep the guidelines in mind when building their site. As you can see, web sites don't have to be boring to be accessible.
After
all, the web is supposed to be for everyone!
